Springtime Allergies
fresh crop
Springtime allergies, hay fever - happy days are here again!

Just a brief note to introduce myself, my name is Joy Shankster. I am a Registered Classical Homoeopath and I have been involved in complementary therapies for the last 14 years. I am a qualified Aromatherapist, Bach Flower Therapist and Homoeopath and in my spare time (ha ha) I also teach First Aid! My practice is in South Woodham Ferrers but I have patients from as far as Southend and going the other way, Ingatestone and the outskirts of London! I hope you find this first article interesting and informative and I look forward to the pleasure of writing to you again later in the year!

We are all eagerly awaiting the warmer weather, hopefully it’s not far away now, it’s great to see all the buds on the tress - awaiting... for just that hint of warmer weather and glorious sunshine to burst into party mode - full of colour and perfume. Such wonderful sights after the long cold winter and the snow! Feats for sore eyes indeed!

For most of us, Springtime is a wonderful time of year - but for those who unfortunately suffer with allergies and hay fever it heralds the start of another period of misery - sneezing, runny eyes and noses and for those worst affected... staying indoors!!

Hay Fever (also known as allergic rhinitis) affects more than 20% of the population - various irritants can trigger the attack - chemicals, dust, fur, feathers, but for lots of people with the onset of springtime comes the release of the tree, grass, flower and weed pollens. This can be a particularly hard time for Mums and Dads too, as maybe only one person in a family suffers and arranging outings to suit everyone is a nightmare!

There are a number of Homoeopathic remedies that might help to ease the acute symptoms, the art is picking the correct remedy for yourself and how you are affected - I have listed just four below, there are lots more if these don’t suit your particular symptoms... but you might want to consider investing in the help of a Homoeopath to find the correct remedy for you if you are badly affected, at least you will be on the right track!

Allium (red Onion)
Nose burns from watery discharde, may also burn the upper lip. Eye discharge profuse, but bland, eyes sensitive to light. Violent sneezing. Often begins on the left side but may spread to the right as well. Highly sensitive to flowers pollen. Better for being out in the cool, open air and worse for warmth, warm room.

Arsenicum album
Thin, burning watery discharge drips from nose, but nose feels blocked, sneezing but with no relief. Tends to start on the right side. Burning in nose, eyes and throat, which improves with heat or a hot drink! Anxious, restless, chilly, thirsty for small sips. Sneezing - as if one spot is being tickled by a feather! Better for being in the warm, worse in the cold or inhaling cold air, but sometimes just the head is better for being cold, rest of body needs warmth!

Euphrasia (also known as eyebright)
Bland nose discharge, but profuse burning runny eyes, which water all the time. Eyes inflamed, extreme irritation, burning and itching, very sore. Intense sneezing. Better at night when lying down, worse in the morning, with warm breezes or wind. Often accompanied by a constant tickling cough, which is better at night lying down and worse in the day!

Sabadilla
Tremendous bouts of sneezing that are debilitating. Constant itching and tingling inside nose, runny nose, but nose feels blocked. Every sneeze brings tears. Watery, burning and redness of eyes. Feels chilly. Runny nose and sneezing worse for cold, open air and flower pollens, better for heat and warm drinks. Often accompanied by a dry cough and left sided sore throat.

You can purchase these remedies quite easily, try the 6c first if it is available, if not, try the 30c potency. Drop one of the tablets into a bottle of still water - this can be large or small depending on how thirsty your are. Shake the bottle till the tablet has dissolved and sip frequently during the day - you can do this over a 3 day period, top the bottle up with tap water if it runs low, but don’t let the bottle empty until the 3rd day. Shake and sip is the golden rule! You will find that over the 3 day period you will take in enough remedy to stimulate your own body’s healing mechanism - providing you have chosen the correct remedy for you!

Bach Flower Remedy may also help to ease the symptoms - take 4 drops in a small glass of water and sip. If you find you’re feeling sorry for yourself - take 2 drops of Willow as well - that will hopefully lift your spirits!

As a Homoeopath, I would recommend starting treatment before the hay fever season as it is usually a deep-seated problem and takes time to improve - Homoeopathy helps to strengthen your constitution and reduce your level of sensitivity, so hopefully next year will be a wonderful spring for you too!

Enjoy
