Charlotte’s sister Louise, 15, ran away from home two years ago.
“I thought my older sister ran away from home because of me. I thought
she didn’t love me anymore, and I thought my parents wouldn’t either and they’d blame me for her going.
“I had teased Louise about a boy she liked the day before, but I only told a few friends about it. When Dad found out about it he came down hard on her and said she was too young to see this boy.
The following day she missed school and didn’t come home that night.
“Dad had rung all the hospitals, the police and all Louise’s friends, but no one had seen her. The police said she would come home again, and it wasn’t time to worry yet.
I remember thinking, “If she could
only see how much we loved her,
she would come back”
As the months went by, I thought about running away too and trying to find Louise, but I am glad now I didn’t. One day in school, the head came in and asked me to come to his office and there was a policewoman there. They’d found Louise and she was OK.
You may think that no one cares about you and it is easy to run away, but if you do you hurt your family and end up alone and scared like Louise did. She was lucky as she was found. Some children aren’t.
The names have been changed to protect the family.
